Witnesses say a man dressed in a vest and camouflage fatigues opened fire randomly on the crowd as the Gilroy Garlic Festival was winding down.

The shooter gained access to the festival by cutting through a fence and wounded least 15, killing 3 others on Sunday including a 6 year-old boy who was shot and killed. Police confronted and killed the suspect, who carried “some sort of a rifle,” within a minute of him opening fire. The festival had tight security, including metal detectors.

The first reports of gunshots were reported at 5:41 p.m. PT as the three-day festival was coming to an end. Gilroy is approximately 30 miles southeast of San Jose, Calif.

The City of Gilroy issued a statement via Facebook early Monday morning, which you can read below.
