One of the things we need most when under stress and/or suffering from anxiety is sleep. This can be difficult since the two really don’t go together! However, you have to figure it out even if you must see your doctor for a little help. Now, your tendency is going to be to self medicate. People often reach for booze, prescription drugs (that weren’t prescribed for them), marijuana, and the list goes on. Listen, I get it! A glass of wine makes me feel very relaxed, weed helps many “checkout”, and Xanax can be very tempting because it works quickly and efficiently. But when you start reaching for that second and third glass of wine, and chasing it with your roommates Xanax…it’s time to rethink your coping mechanism. Why? Because while those things can be a temporary fix..they can lead to a permanent addiction! And they can also cause what is known as a rebound effect if being overused, which means the anxiety goes away, but comes back with a vengeance.
I’ve never really had trouble sleeping until this last battle I had with anxiety. It was very frustrating! I would wake up nearly at the exact same time every hour on the hour. It turned out to have a lot to do with the medication that I had been prescribed to help with the anxiety. I thought it would go away, but when it didn’t I spoke to my doctor who quickly made a change and now I am sleeping well! I can’t tell you what a difference it has made in decreasing the level of my anxiety. In fact, I am now having very little anxiety. As my 84 year-old momma says, “This too shall pass.” May God keep you and bless you…and may His face shine upon you!
