SALEM, Ore. – Oregon’s new Kid Governor took office in Salem Wednesday.

Lea Andrus is a 5th grader at Hawks View Elementary in Sherwood.

She took her oath from the Senate chamber at the capitol and laid out her priority for her year-long term, “I hope that we can reduce bullying in our schools and communities through kindness.”

She introduced several programs, including weekly letters of kindness in the classroom and kindness helpers, “This will allow everyone in the classroom to serve and be more compassionate.”

She also called on families to take kindness home, “I would encourage students and adults to do one daily act of service in their homes.”

Governor Lea was chosen from 7 finalists. The 6 other students will serve in her cabinet.

Oregon became just the second state in the nation to have the program in 2017.
