BEAVERTON, Wash. (AP) – Beaverton police have arrested a former Washington County court staffer after she was accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars in fines and fees.

Jan Sutherland was booked Thursday into the Washington County Jail after a grand jury indicted her on 17 felony counts of aggravated theft and 13 misdemeanor counts of official misconduct.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports officers launched their investigation into the Washington County Justice Court in February and ultimately uncovered financial discrepancies going back more than six years, said Beaverton Police Officer Jeremy Shaw in a written statement.

As the court’s longtime administrator, Sutherland was responsible for balancing the cash at the end of every day and taking the money to the bank in a tamper-proof envelope.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Sutherland had an attorney.
