Fully-Clothed Stephen Colbert Delivers Surprise “Social Distancing” Monologue From Bathtub

America’s late-night shows were supposed to go dark Monday due to the coronavirus pandemic. But Late Show host Stephen Colbert surprised viewers by delivering a special “social distancing”-themed monologue from his bathtub. To make matters even wackier, Colbert–wearing a full suit–was submerged in bubbles for the entire 10 minutes of his Lather Show.

“Welcome to my bathroom. I’m your host, Stephen Colbert,” he said at 11:35 p.m. before moving on to coronavirus-related topics, like hoarding beans and Mayor Bill de Blasio’s decision to visit his local YMCA for a workout right before it was forced to close. “Come on, Mr. Mayor: Don’t you know that during an epidemic, it’s fun to stay at your h-o-m-e,” he said, to the tune of the vintage Village People hit, “Y.M.C.A.” “’Cause if you don’t, we’ll be d-e-a-d.”

After the monologue, Mr. Colbert turned to a piece taped last week featuring a Late Show producer and his mother learning about coronavirus. The rest of the show featured segments from a February episode. As of Tuesday morning, it wasn’t known whether Colbert planned to repeat the stunt.
