Why Is The Coast Dangerous Right Now?

If you’re thinking about visiting the Oregon Coast anytime soon, do a headcount before going out on the beach!

The King Tides are here, which are the highest winter tides of the year, and are expected to reach as much as almost 10 feet above average in places like Newport.   They happen because this is the time when the moon is closest to the Earth, and the Earth is closest to the sun.

The Coast Guard has warned people against going out on jetties, low-lying areas, and even the beaches in many places, as the extreme tides can cause sneaker waves and quickly rising levels.

In other words, this is the part of the year when you visit Seaside and don’t have to wonder what all the extra beach is for?  Why is there even sand there most of the time?
