Zombie Trees? That’s A Thing Now?

Your trees are out to get you this year.

Experts are saying that the extreme hot weather and dry spell we had this summer caused trees to undergo tremendous “stress,” and that some of them may be structurally unsound now because of it.  With the wetness coming back in such volume, trees may have rotten insides that will succumb to the moisture change, and drop their limbs.  Limbs could fall on cars, houses, and in the worst-case, a person unaware of the danger.

Zombie trees look fine, but are usually rotten only on the inside.  However, arborists say that a good indicator is mushrooms around the trunk of the tree, as mushrooms feed on decay.  Seeing fungus forming doesn’t necessarily mean your tree is rotten, but it’s a good early indicator.  Also, if you’re in a group of trees, and one of the trees has mushrooms, but is definitely denying it loudly and often to the group…  do NOT trust that tree.
